Municipal Climate Change Action in Germany and Canada: Same Goal, Different (Financial) Approaches

Friday, September 23, 2022 · 10:00–11:30am · SSC 6210

Climate change is a global challenge and, as such, affects Canada and Germany. In both countries, municipalities play a major role in responding to climate change, especially when it comes to local climate mitigation measures. However, the success of local mitigation measures greatly depends on the financial resources available to municipalities. The presentation aims to introduce the local government system in Germany, followed by a short comparative overview of how climate actions are financed at the local level in Germany and Canada. The approaches in the two countries are different, which, among other things, is due to the different legal systems.

Malin Nischwitz is a fully qualified lawyer and PhD candidate at the Institute for Politics and Public Law (University of Munich). Her doctoral work has mostly been on the role of financial instruments, especially subsidies, in achieving sustainability and carbon neutrality in Germany and the European Union. Her research focus lies on climate change as a (financial) challenge for municipalities.
